East Asia Summit

Why in news? 

India was represented by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at the East Asia Summit. In this summit the 'Hanoi Declaration' was adopted.

Important key points about this meeting:

The Foreign Minister has also agreed to to maintain sovereignty, integrity, respect international maritime laws in the South China Sea region of East Asia. 

The Hanoi Declaration was made in the year 2010, for the development of the region working with ASEAN countries. 

To pursue the Phnom Penh Declaration (2018-2022) at the meeting, the Manila plan of action emphasis was placed on effective implementation.


About East Asia Summit:

This is a forum of 18 regional leaders for cooperation on political, security and economic challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. It was established in 2005.

This summit 10 Asean countries and 8 other countries which are- Japan, China, Australia, India, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia and the United States

India is among the founding members of the East Asia Summit.
