OTT services will be under Ministry of Information and Brodcasting

Announcement to bring video streaming services under the control of the Ministry


The central government recently announced that Video streaming services such as Hotstar over the top (OTT) platforms, such as online news portals, Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney Hotstar will be under the control of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Why this announcement was done ? 

There are no specific rules or regulations to regulate any over the top (OTT) platform so far, however section 79 of the Information Technology Act, 2000 in video streaming services is applies to the providers.

There were 17 crore OTT platform users in India as of 7 March 2019, while the value of video streaming industry was Rs500 crore which is estimated to increase to Rs4000 crore by the year 2025.

Apart from this, many cases have been filed in the courts regarding the content lrovided on the OTT platforms. Therefore, it is necessary to bring these platforms under control in order to control the above situations.


What is Over the Top (OTT) platform? 

These platforms are used by consumers through the Internet. This includes 
Services like audio streaming, Video streaming, message service or Internet-based voice calling, etc.

These platforms are gaining popularity with short feature films, web-series. Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar etc. are the main examples.
